CLC announces its spring concert schedule

Featuring musical styles ranging from show tunes and classical music to gospel songs and jazz classics, the College of Lake County music department will present seven choral and instrumental music concerts during spring semester.

The CLC music department boasts five instrumental groups: the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble, Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Combo and Concert Band. CLC's choral program includes four ensembles: Choir of Lake County, CLC Singers, Chamber Singers and Gospel Choir.

CLC ensembles feature talented CLC students and community members. All concerts are held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

• Gospel Choir Concert, Saturday, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m. Celebrate Black History Month with gospel songs by historic and contemporary artists and traditional Negro spirituals featuring soulful soloists and a rockin' rhythm section.

• 39th Annual Guest Artist Concert featuring Tom Garling, Sunday, March 6, at 4 p.m. Trombonist Tom Garling, a well-known Chicago recording artist, composer, arranger, clinician and performer, will solo with the CLC Monday Night Jazz Ensemble. The Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble will perform six selections to open the concert.

• Wind Ensemble, Sunday, March 13, at 4 p.m. Enjoy a varied program of music, including "Rise of the Firebird" by Steven Reinecke, "Crown Imperial" by William Walton, "When You Wish Upon a Star," arranged by Sammy Nestico, "Mars" by Gustav Holst, "O How Amiable" (with CLC vocalists) by Ralph Vaughan Williams, "Eternal Father, Strong to Save" by Claude T. Smith, selections from "West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein and "Resplendent Glory" by Rossano Galante.

• Spring Choral Concert, Saturday, April 9, at 4 p.m. The CLC Singers will present Renaissance novelty songs and excerpts from Schubert's "Mass in G." The Choir of Lake County will perform a medley from "Showboat" and Randall Thompson's "Alleluia." The Chamber Singers' program will feature choral works using Shakespearean texts to honor the 400th anniversary of his death, including works by Ralph Vaughan Williams and John Rutter. The Gospel Choir will present a variety of contemporary and traditional gospel songs. The mass choir finale, "Ye Shall Have a Song" from Randall Thompson's "The Peaceable Kingdom," will feature all four choirs.

• Jazz Ensembles, Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. The Monday and Tuesday Night Jazz Ensembles will play a selection of jazz charts celebrating the big band tradition.

• Wind Ensemble, Sunday, May 1, at 4 p.m. The excellent acoustics of the Mainstage Theatre are the perfect complement to programs of high-quality and challenging wind music.

• Concert Band Concert, Wednesday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. John Mose and the 60-member Concert Band will perform a wide-ranging program of music from the concert band repertoire.
