Arlington Heights concert band presents Winter Concert
The Arlington Heights Community Concert Band, in partnership with District 214 Community Education, will hold its third concert of the indoor season Sunday, Feb. 28.
The Winter Concert is one of the last two concerts under the musical direction of Mark Hengesh, who will be retiring from the band after the Spring Concert.
"Being my last two concerts, I am including some music that is personally special. It is important that the music is within the abilities of the band while still keeping the variety and audience appeal in the programs," says Hengesh.
Musical selections include "Raging Machines" by Brian Balmages, which was commissioned for Hengesh's retirement from Glenbard West High School in 2007.
Hengesh is a big fan of the compositions of Julie Giroux and has programmed her "La Mezquita de Cordoba," a very descriptive piece based on the history of the Mosque in Cordoba, Spain.
The percussion section will be featured in "Sinfolnians Concert March" by Clifton Williams, which also includes woodwind writing and trumpet fanfares throughout. "A Copland Portrait" by Clare Grundman is a medley of Aaron Copland's most well known melodies.
The concert will be at 3 p.m. at the Forest View Educational Center Theater, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights. Admission is free.
To reserve tickets, call (847) 718-7702 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday or email ahccbtickets@gmail.com. Remaining tickets will be available at the door.
The band is holding a food drive and will be collecting nonperishable food and toiletries on the day of the concert to support the Elk Grove Township Food Pantry.
