Australia to play Greece in international friendly in June

SYDNEY (AP) - Asian Cup champion Australia will play 2004 European champion Greece in an international friendly at Sydney's Olympic stadium on June 4, the first meeting between the two countries since the Socceroos' 1-0 victory in front of 95,000 fans in Melbourne in 2006.

Socceroos coach Ange Postecolglou, who was born in Greece and moved to Australia as a child, said Tuesday the match in Sydney and another, likely in Melbourne on June 7, would be an important warm-up for the next round of Asian qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup.

Football Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop said, "Greece has a proud football history and with so many Australians having a Greek heritage this is going to be a special match."
