Homeless sex offender from Elgin imprisoned for not registering

A 45-year-old homeless man from Elgin was sentenced late last week to eight years in prison for failing to register as a sex offender.

Steven M. Dunner was convicted in December 2015 of failure to register as a sex offender, a felony. He was eligible for an extended term because of his 11 felony arrests from 1992 through 2009.

Prosecutors said Dunner provided Elgin police with bogus addresses numerous times between November 2014 and April 2015 while he was attempting to comply with requirements from the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act.

He was convicted in 2009 of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, which required him to register as a sex offender.

Dunner can have his prison term cut in half for good behavior, and he gets credit for nearly 300 days served at the Kane County jail since his arrest, prosecutors said.
