'Who's Who of Owls' program at Bartlett Library was a real hoot

The Bartlett Library hosted award-winning naturalist Mark Spreyer on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. as he presented the truth about some North American owls and other raptors.

Spreyer of the Stillman Nature Center, as well as two of Stillman's workers, brought out a total of five birds at the program, four owls and one hawk. The first two that were brought out were screech owls, one was a red phase and the other a grey phase. Then they brought out a broad-winged hawk. Next was the barred owl, and last was the great horned owl. The birds that were there are permanently injured, so they are unable to return to the wild.

The owls and hawk were walked around the room so patrons could see them up close.

At the end of the program, Youth and Teen Services Manager Ruth Anne Mielke raffled off 10 owl puppets. The patrons who won were really happy with the little puppets.

Spreyer then signed and sold his book "Natural Digressions" at the end of the program.
