127-year old lumber business closing in Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) - A Quincy lumber business owned by the same family for 127 years will close in March.

Bernzen Lumber Co. has been purchased by a business that will open its own lumberyard at the same location.

Greg Bernzen represents the fifth generation to run the business. He says he can't identify the new owner until the sale is complete.

Bernzen tells the (Quincy) Herald-Whig (http://bit.ly/1mMaCS8 ) that his father, Bill, is in poor health and his mother, Nancy, wants to take care of him without worrying about the business too.

The company will liquidate its store at an auction March 16.

The new business should be open by April.

Bernzen says big-box store competition did not affect the decision.

The business opened in 1889 and moved to its present site in 1910.
