Mayor of Mount Vernon stepping down due to health concerns
MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) - The mayor of Mount Vernon in southern Indiana says he's stepping down March 1 due to health reasons.
The Evansville Courier and Press reports (http://bit.ly/1WwjVSB ) that 70-year-old Mayor John Tucker told the City Council about his decision Thursday night. The Democrat was elected to his third term in November. He says he doesn't feel like he's 100 percent "and that's not right."
The Democratic Party will hold a caucus to choose his successor.
Tucker previously was a city councilman for 12 years. He was a Mount Vernon police officer for 33 years.
Mount Vernon has about 7,000 residents and is on the Ohio River about 20 miles west of Evansville.
