Fort Wayne police chief to take new assignment
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry has announced that the city's first black police chief will take a new position as the head of a new community relations division.
The change for Police Chief Garry Hamilton takes effect Aug. 1 and Hamilton will remain chief of police until then.
A statement from the city say Hamilton requested the reassignment because he wants to "bring law enforcement efforts closer to neighborhoods and businesses."
Hamilton joined the force in 1994 and became chief in January of 2014.
The mayor tells WANE-TV that Hamilton has been "a tremendous police chief."
