Marengo woman stable after crashing into horse

A 52-year-old Marengo woman whose car struck a horse Wednesday evening in unincorporated Coral Township survived the crash, though the animal she hit had to be put down, authorities said.

The woman was driving a 2002 Honda CR-V eastbound near the 8000 block of Route 20 east of Coral Road when at 6:13 p.m. her vehicle struck one of two horses that had gotten loose from a local farm, authorities said.

The woman was flown by Flight for Life to St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford where she remains in stable condition. She was wearing her seat belt and her front air bag had deployed, police said.

Authorities do not suspect drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

The owner of the horse arranged for it to be euthanized at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Traffic Crash Investigations Unit is investigating. Members of Marengo Fire Protection District, Union Fire Protection District, and Illinois Department of Transportation also responded.
