Images: #TBT Gallery revisits Elgin

Elgin was founded in 1835 by the Gifford brothers, James and Hezekiah, and Samuel Kimball. They named the city after a Scottish hymn called “The Song of Elgin.” The city had more than 108,000 residents counted in the 2010 census, making it the eighth largest city in Illinois and the 241st largest city in the United States.

All of the photographs in this #TBT Gallery can be purchased at the Elgin History Museum and on elginhistory.org. Funds from sales are used to maintain the collection. The Channing Cemetery held some of the original settlers of Elgin. It reached capacity in 1889 and the City of Elgin bought property from the Gifford family to start the Bluff City Cemetery. Grave markers and caskets were gradually moved from the Channing Cemetery to the Bluff City Cemetery. Channing Elementary now sits where the original cemetery once was. Elgin Dairy farmer Lester Teeple wanted to build an octagon shaped barn, but couldn't get lumber long enough in 1885. So he built the only registered 16-sided barn in Illinois. The Teeple barn was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and then collapsed in high winds in 2007. It was on Randall Road just south of I-90. Courtesy of Elgin History Museum
