Dominick's site up for auction in Carpentersville

After sitting vacant for nearly five years, the former Dominick's site in Carpentersville is up for auction next month.

The Dominick's store occupied a 65,636-square-foot building at 2411 Randall Road until it closed in November 2011. Representatives from parent grocery company Albertsons have been seeking a long-term user for the site ever since, Carpentersville Economic Development Director Patrick Burke said.

"We want something that's going to drive traffic to the area and that would be complementary to the other commercial use along Randall and Huntley (roads)," Burke said. "There's a great deal of variety that could go into this site."

The available space is located in Prairie Meadows Shopping Center and would serve as the anchor to a 6.3-acre neighborhood strip mall, according to the auction listing on Auction.com.

Possible uses include large commercial companies, retail stores or professional offices, Burke said. Building owners haven't received much interest from companies that need such a large space, he said, so the site may be subdivided to allow for multiple tenants.

"Maybe you get an office use for half, and a commercial use for half," he said. "We're certainly interested in all those uses. The village would be very supportive of trying to get something like that in there as well."

Burke said building owners could be using the auction, which will take place March 21 to 23, as a tool for bringing more interest to the building from a broader audience. Bids start at $600,000.

Interested parties can tour the property from 9:30 to 10 a.m. March 8 and 9.
