Foreign Film Sundays to feature 'Blancanieves' at Geneva library

Enjoy the Spanish movie "Blancanieves" from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Geneva Public Library, 127 James St. This 2012 Spanish black-and-white silent fantasy drama film is based on the fairy tale "Snow White" by the Brothers Grimm, and the story is set in a romantic vision of 1920s Andalusia.

Once upon a time there was a little girl who had never known her mother. She learned the art of her father, a famous bullfighter, but was hated by her evil stepmother. One day she ran away with a troupe of dwarves, and became a legend. Set in southern Spain in 1920s, Blancanieves is a tribute to silent films. Blancanieves was also Spain's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for 2012.

The film, which the late film critic Roger Ebert gave 4 stars and Chicago Tribune critic Michael Philips gave 3½ stars, was directed by Pablo Berger. It was an "Official Selection" at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012.

The PG-13 film is sponsored by the International Cultural Exchange Committee, and the viewing will be followed by a discussion.
