German football federation to elect new president in April

BERLIN (AP) - The German football federation will elect a new president on April 15 with its treasurer Reinhard Grindel all but certain to take the position.

The DFB says its board members agreed unanimously Friday to hold an extraordinary meeting at which 259 delegates, including members of national, regional and league associations as well as honorary members, will vote for Wolfgang Niersbach's replacement.

Niersbach stepped down on Nov. 9 amid claims of corruption concerning the awarding of the 2006 World Cup to Germany.

DFB vice-presidents Rainer Koch and Reinhard Rauball, who is also president of the German football league, have been leading the federation on an interim basis.

Grindel's formal convocation will take place at the DFB's board meeting on March 3.
