Firefighter injured responding to fire in Elgin
A firefighter was injured slipping on ice while responding to a house fire Thursday night in Elgin.
The fire department responded at about 7:30 p.m. to a report of a smoke detector going off and smoke coming from a home in the 200 block of Mill Street, Battalion Chief Terence M. Bruce said in a news release.
Firefighters found light smoke coming from the front of the two-story home, and a fire was in the kitchen trash container, extending into the wall and ceiling.
No one was home at the time, and there were no civilian injuries. The injured firefighter was taken to the hospital.
Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. Damage was estimated at about $11,000.
