Elgin to improve zoo facility for bison
ELGIN, Ill. (AP) - Fans of Elgin's zoo want the city to add bison as well as upgrading current bison facilities in a $200,000 improvement plan.
The (Elgin) Courier-News reports (http://trib.in/2061wNk ) the city plans to take the money from $6 million produced from Grand Victoria Casino taxes and fees.
Laura Valdez-Wilson is Elgin's senior management analyst. She says the $200,000 investment at Lords Park Zoo could upgrade care for the two bison at the zoo. Recommendations include a chute and holding pen to allow veterinarians to safely care for them.
Friends of Lords Park Zoo have discussed adding bison to the zoo. The group was responsible for Brookfield Zoo's donation of the two current bison.
Group spokesman Terry Gabel says buying two young bison could cost about $3,000.
