House votes to dispense tax reserves to local governments

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana House unanimously approved a bill that would distribute to local governments more than $500 million in income taxes that are currently held in reserve.
The bill by Rep. Todd Huston, a Fishers Republican, was approved Tuesday on a 97-0 vote. The Senate passed a similar measure. The Senate bill would also return local option income taxes held in state reserves, but also requires 75 percent of the money to be spent on road improvements.
Huston's bill would not attach such requirements. But Huston says he still hopes the one-time distribution would be used to help pay for infrastructure.
The House proposal now heads to the Senate for consideration.
