Geneva woman accused of poisoning husband

GENEVA, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago woman is accused of intentionally poisoning her husband and has been charged with murder.

Kane County prosecutors on Tuesday said they charged 53-year-old Julia L. Gutierrez of Geneva with first-degree murder in the death of her husband, 53-year-old Eduardo Gutierrez of Geneva. A judge continued Julia Gutierrez's bond court hearing Tuesday until Wednesday.

Prosecutors say that between Jan. 26 and Jan. 28, Julia Gutierrez mixed the sedative Temazepam into a drink and gave it to her husband. Authorities say Eduardo Gutierrez consumed the drink and died. Prosecutors say Geneva police received a well-being check call on Jan. 28 and found Eduardo Gutierrez dead and Julia Gutierrez in need of medical help. She was taken to the hospital.

A phone message left requesting comment Tuesday at Gutierrez's residence wasn't immediately returned.
