Aurora officers to take Polar Plunge
Several Aurora police officers and support employees will be "taking the plunge" next month to support Special Olympics Illinois.
The annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge is at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at Loon Lake, inside Silver Springs State Park in Yorkville.
Last year, a team from the Aurora police raised more than $3,500 during the Polar Plunge. Statewide, more than 7,600 plungers raised $2.25 million for Special Olympics.
The goal of the plunge is to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics Illinois so the organization can continue to provide year-round training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Donations for the Aurora police team are being collected by Officer Lisa Carter, who can be reached at (630) 256-5347 or carterl@apd.aurora.il.us. Direct donations can be made online by logging onto soill.org/polar-plunge, clicking Support a Plunger, selecting Teams and entering Aurora police in the Find a Participant search bar.
Interested spectators can show up at the Kendall County Fairgrounds on Route 71 and East Highpoint Road, Yorkville, where they will be bused to Loon Lake beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Last year, Aurora police officers raised more than $27,000 for the charity through various fundraisers and events. To learn more about Special Olympics Illinois, visit soill.org.
