Fire leaves St. Charles home uninhabitable
A fire Thursday afternoon in St. Charles did about $100,000 damage to a home and left it uninhabitable, fire officials said.
A resident of the home on the 400 block of 14th Street returned from running an errand just after 3 p.m. and discovered a fire in the basement spreading up the stairwell, St. Charles firefighters said.
The fire spread into the first and second floors and took about 40 minutes to extinguish, fire officials said.
Nobody was injured. Geneva, Batavia, South Elgin, Elburn and Fermilab fire departments all assisted. So far, the cause appears accidental, fire officials said.
