Indiana power plant invites public to see winter bald eagles

CAYUGA, Ind. (AP) - A western Indiana power plant where bald eagles congregate each winter to hunt for fish in the Wabash River is inviting the public to drop by to see the elegant birds in action.

Duke Energy's annual "Eagle Viewing Day" will be held Jan. 30 at its Cayuga Generating Station in Vermillion County, about 35 miles north of Terre Haute along State Road 63.

Warm water discharged by the plant keeps the river free of winter ice, attracting fish. Duke Energy says most years those waters hold Indiana's largest population of mid-winter migratory bald eagles.

Cayuga plant manager Bill Luke says more than 25,000 people have attended the eagle-viewing days since 1996 to watch the eagles with binoculars and viewing scopes.

Construction around the plant cancelled last year's eagle-watching event.
