Citadel names offensive coordinator Thompson new head coach

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Citadel offensive coordinator Brent Thompson has been named the Bulldogs' head football coach, replacing Mike Houston.

Thompson spent the past two seasons guiding the offense and coaching quarterbacks and B-backs in the Bulldogs' effective triple-option rushing attack. Thompson was promoted by athletic director Jim Senter one day after Houston was announced as James Madison's head football coach.

Thompson was at Lenoir-Rhyne from 2010-13 before coming to the Citadel. His attack there in 2013 set the NCAA record for all divisions in rushing yards in a season with 5,563.

Thompson's attack produced 27 individual 100-yard rushing games at the Citadel the past two years. The Bulldogs went 9-4 last year to earn the Southern Conference title and reach the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
