Lawyer: Police shooting of black teen deserves second look

CHICAGO (AP) - A lawyer for the family of a black carjacking suspect fatally shot by a white Chicago police officer in 2013 hopes newly released video of the shooting will help prompt a reopening of a criminal investigation against police.

Footage made public Thursday doesn't clearly show if Cedrick Chatman turned threateningly toward officers chasing him. The officer who shot him said he did. The Chatman family says in a civil suit the officer's claim is untrue.

Family attorney Brain Coffman says it's Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez's call. He hopes she might consider reopening the case.

But at a news conference Thursday, Alvarez didn't seem inclined to do so. Asked about reopening the case, she said her office looked into it in 2013 and determined "no criminal charges were warranted."
