Elgin fire leaves family homeless

A family was left homeless and a dog was rescued after a fire in Elgin on Friday morning, authorities said.

Investigators are trying to determine a cause of the fire that was reported at 11:51 a.m. at a home in the 0-100 block of Sumac Lane, officials said. The fire triggered a home security fire alarm, and a passer-by reported smoke coming from the home.

Black smoke was seen coming from the basement, fire officials said in a statement. The fire was considered under control at 12:05 p.m.

Crews didn't find anyone in the home but rescued the family's dog, according to the fire department. Officials said there were initial concerns because a vehicle was in the driveway and no one answered the door.

Total damage was estimated at $75,000. Elgin's code enforcement department red-tagged the house after it was determined it wasn't livable due to the damage.

No firefighters were injured.
