Florida fires Callahan after 1 year as defensive backs coach

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Florida has fired defensive backs coach Kirk Callahan.

Coach Jim McElwain made the announcement Friday, parting ways with Callahan in the middle of the final recruiting push.

McElwain says in a statement that "we are making a change on our staff. Moving forward, Kirk Callahan will be looking at some other opportunities and he has a long career ahead of him."

The 30-year-old Callahan completed one season at Florida after spending three years as Central Florida's defensive backs coach. He also played collegiately at UCF and began his coaching career as a student assistant there in 2007. He later served as an intern (2010) and graduate assistant (2011) at Florida.

Callahan is owed $315,000 after signing a two-year contract in January 2015.
