Prospect Heights Park District celebrates 50 years

The Prospect Heights Park District is celebrating 50 years of parks and recreation. The district was formed in 1966 by the Prospect Heights Lions Club and the Prospect Heights Fieldhouse Association.

Major accomplishments for the district include: In 1968, the park district purchased the swimming pool from the Lions Club; in 1976, the Gary Morava Recreation Center opened; in 1994, an addition which includes a fitness center and dance studio was added; in 1996, the Family Aquatic Center opened; and in 1999, the Old Orchard Country Club was purchased.

To commemorate the anniversary, activities for all ages are scheduled throughout the year. The kickoff event will be The PHPD Drive-In, which will be from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at the Gary Morava Recreation Center.

The first 50 people who register will receive 50 percent off. The fee is $6 per child; free for parents.

Children will decorate their very own cardboard car and then watch a movie from the car. The park district will also have prizes to celebrate the anniversary.

On Friday, Feb. 19, the park district will host the Royal Family Ball, which includes dinner, dancing and games. Free Kiddie Olympics will be offered March 10. from 6-7 p.m. The Fitness Center, Creative Kids Preschool, Kinderstop and STAR Studio will have Open Houses March 10.

Fifty Seniors will enjoy a free lunch April 25 (registration is required). On April 27, 50 adults will enjoy hitting a bucket of golf balls and wine tasting at Old Orchard Country Club (registration is required).
