Indianapolis police officer resigns after drug arrest

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Indianapolis police officer arrested on preliminary charges of dealing and possessing cocaine has resigned.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said Wednesday that 35-year-old Nikolas Layton has resigned. He was a 10-year veteran assigned to IMPD's hit-and-run investigation unit and the son of Marion County Sheriff John Layton.

Police Chief Troy Riggs had suspended Layton without pay and planned to recommend his dismissal.

IMPD says Nikolas Layton was among three suspects arrested Tuesday as part of a drug investigation. He was released on bond.

Nikolas Layton doesn't have a published home telephone number and he could not be reached for comment. Online court records did not show an attorney representing him.
