Actress Sherri Shepherd appeals surrogacy ruling

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Actress Sherri Shepherd is appealing a Pennsylvania court ruling that found her responsible for a child born to a surrogate before she divorced.

The Legal Intelligencer (http://goo.gl/SoSsP6) reports Wednesday that Shepherd is appealing the Superior Court decision to the state's high court.

Shepherd's ex-husband, Lamar Sally, is raising the 1-year-old boy in Los Angeles and has sought $4,100 in monthly child support from the actress.

Court papers show Shepherd paid more than $100,000 in fees to a New Jersey agency and supported the Pennsylvania surrogate's pregnancy until her marriage faltered. She then tried to void the contract.

Surrogacy advocates say the Superior Court ruling last year is the first to declare surrogacy contracts legal and binding in Pennsylvania.

Shepherd worked on several sitcoms and co-hosted ABC's "The View."
