Celebrate life of MLK at School Day Off program in Des Plaines
Celebrate the life of social activist Martin Luther King Jr. at the School Day Off program from 1-3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at the Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson Street.
Children will learn some history about this American Baptist minister and Civil Rights Movement leader of the 1950s and then create a colorful collage. King, who was born on Jan. 15, 1929, was assassinated April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, one day after his "I've Been to the Mountaintop" address.
"Martin Luther King Jr. believed in nonviolence and used peaceful methods to bring about social change," said Carmina Gonzalez, Des Plaines History Center programs assistant. "We will discuss his life and make a craft on the day our nation honors him."
The program is designed for children, ages 5-12, with an adult. The fee is $3 per child for nonmembers, $2 for members.
