Warren's Jean-Paul gets the jump on indoor track season at Lewis

Lewis senior Isaac Jean-Paul, a Warren High School graduate, took home the long jump title with a NCAA provisional leap of 23 feet, 4½ inches (7.12m) as the Flyers opened their indoor season by winning their own Lewis Open title at Lewis' Recreation Center Fieldhouse.

Jean-Paul was a 2015 NCAA Division II Indoor high jump champion and three-time all-American. He owns the indoor (7-3) and outdoor (6-10) school-records for Lewis.

He was the 2015 GLVC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year after taking home individual titles in both the high jump and long jump events, helping the Flyers to their second straight conference title.

Jean-Paul even surpassed coach Dana Schwarting's expectations last year.

"When (Isaac) signed, I was hoping I had an All-American caliber jumper each year and hoped he would have a shot at a title," said Dana Schwarting. "We just ramped up the timetable by a year."

Women's track and field

Lewis senior Amber Cook (Warren) set a NCAA provisional marks and won the won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 5 inches (1.65m) as the Flyers captured their own Lewis Open at Lewis' Recreation Center Fieldhouse.

Cook qualified for the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the triple jump and owns the outdoor school-record in the event with a leap of 39-9.

"Amber is just a testament to hard work," said coach Dana Schwarting in a school news release prior to the season. "She has really transformed her body through hard work in the weight room.

"She was always a talented jumper, but she has put in the work, and now I expect her to reap the benefits this year."

Women's basketball

Augustana junior Olivia Mayer (Libertyville) scored a basket with 4:07 left in the third quarter to give the Vikings their last lead of the game (42-40) in a 71-62 loss at North Park in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game.

The Vikings trailed by five (48-43) after three quarters and only got the margin to as little as 5 points again on one occasion when freshman Carly McCameron (Antioch) hit a free throw with 6:28 left.

North Park connected on 11 straight free throws in the final 1:36 to seal the game.

• Johns Hopkins University freshman Sophia Way (Stevenson) was named the Centennial Conference's women's basketball player of the week last Monday.

She was honored for her 14-point, 8-rebound performance in a 54-47 win over the Rochester Institute of Technology. Way's point and rebound totals were career highs. For the season, she is averaging 5.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

Men's basketball

Augustana senior Brandon Motzel (Carmel) scored 11 and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds with 2 blocked shots in the Vikings' 79-66 win over College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe North Park.

Motzel recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in a 77-75 loss at Elmhurst.

Subway special

Many future collegiate athletes will be competing at the 26th annual Subway Classic this Saturday and Monday at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park.
