Elgin man who made bomb threat hangs himself at jail, authorities say

An Elgin man accused of making a bomb threat as he was being evicted from a house Tuesday apparently hanged himself in the Kane County jail later that day, county officials said Wednesday.

Piotr Dutkiewicz, 51, was facing felony charges after he walked out of a house in the 600 block of Forrest Avenue, placed a large battery with wires taped to it on the ground and said "bomb," according to a Kane County sheriff's office news release.

Sheriff's deputies had been serving Dutkiewicz with court-ordered eviction papers about 8:30 a.m.

Dutkiewicz was taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct and threatening a public official, authorities said. He had not yet been to bond call.

Kane County sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said Dutkiewicz was waiting to be processed in the jail's booking area when he asked to use a bathroom, which has to be opened by a staff member.

About 4:45 p.m., Dutkiewicz was found unresponsive there, sheriff's officials said. Authorities began lifesaving measures, and Dutkiewicz was taken to Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva, where he was pronounced dead.

Coroner Rob Russell said the preliminary determination is suicide by hanging, pending results of toxicology tests.

Gengler said detectives will try to piece together a timeline of Dutkiewicz's activities by watching video surveillance and interviewing officers and staff, he said.

Officials have not been able to reach Dutkiewicz's family. Anyone with information can contact the sheriff's office at (630) 444-1103.
