Fast start favors Mundelein

The host Mustangs snapped a three-game losing skid, partly thanks to a fast start.

Mundelein (5-13) outscored Lakes 14-4 in the first quarter on its way to a 48-29 North Suburban Conference crossover victory in girls basketball on Wednesday.

"Man, Mundelein started out the game on fire," said Lakes coach Brian Phelan. " We need to watch some film and clean up our defensive coverage breakdowns. Give them credit, they made their open shots. They played a good game from tip off to the last buzzer."

Lakes dropped to 8-5.

Lake Zurich 38, Vernon Hills 35: The host Bears stretched their win streak to four games by hanging on for a North Suburban Conference crossover victory.

Senior guard Abby Pirron paced the Bears (10-7) with 12 points, and sophomore forward McKenna Zobel had 10 points. Lake Zurich has won seven of it last eight games.

Kayla Caudle led the way for Vernon Hills (9-9) with a game-high 14 points and 6 rebounds, and Becky Bahlmann contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Stevenson 43, North Chicago 19: Klaire Steffens (11 points) and Madison Wicklund (8) led the way as a total of 10 players scored for the Patriots (13-3) in a North Suburban Conference divisional crossover.
