Daily Herald editors offer hopes for the new year
Strong heart, open mind:
May all your opinions be strong and heartfelt - and yet ever open to the persuasion of a compelling point of view.
-- Jim Slusher, Assistant Managing Editor/Opinion
Sporting wishes:
I wish everyone could experience a year like Jake Arrieta had at least once in their lives. That we could find success as often as the Blackhawks. That our rosters are filled with the talents and drive of humble players like Elena Delle Donne, Joakim Noah, Matt Forte, Chris Sale and Kris Bryant. And that every high school athlete enjoys their journey.
- Tom Quinlan, Assistant Managing Editor/Sports
A common cause for cops and civilians:
After a year in which civilians became suspicious of police, sometimes for good reason, and good cops justifiably felt unfairly lumped in with the bad, my hope for 2016 is that law enforcement and citizens work together to expose those who dishonor the badge while finding more opportunities to thank those who serve with integrity and honor.
-- Charles Keeshan, Deputy City Editor
Time to heal:
My wish is for the Fox Lake and Lake County communities to look to 2016 as a time to heal from the pain caused by the Gliniewicz case.
-- Pete Nenni, Lake County editor/manager
Keep the purity:
My hope is that high school sports remain as pure and innocent as possible. That street agents leave high school athletes alone, and that high school athletes remember they are students first and foremost, and not fall into the trap of believing they are going to get Division I scholarships. Some will, but most won't and we hope they all realize the games they play should be, above all, fun.
-- John Radtke, Assistant Sports Editor
A new mantra:
In 2016, I hope we can return our attention to issues that truly matter and that we can put more energy into embracing and implementing good ideas than we waste blocking them because of who suggested them. I'd like to see each of our elected officials adopt a simple mantra: More governance, less politics.
- Christie Willhite, Assistant City Editor/DuPage
Golfer's prayer:
May the fairway rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May you hit them long and hit them straight. May the golf gods make up for the talent you lack.
-- Jim Davis, News Director, DuPage/Fox Valley
Stand together:
May we delight in learning from those who are different than us, steel ourselves against connecting only with those who think or look as we do, and hold tight to our resolve not to judge anyone solely on dress, skin color, religion, nationality, gender or sexual identity.
- Diane Dungey, Deputy Managing Editor
Let's learn from one another:
My wish is that we all talk less, listen more; that we let facts lead us to our opinions rather than letting our passions and biases do so; and that we teach our kids and grandkids to read the newspaper. (Oh, that's three wishes, isn't it?) Happy new year, everyone.
-- John Lampinen, Editor.
