Penn State's Hackenberg out with apparent shoulder injury

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg won't return to the TaxSlayer Bowl with an apparent right shoulder injury.

Team spokesman Kris Petersen said Hackenberg will miss the second half against Georgia.

Hackenberg seemed to land awkwardly on his throwing shoulder early in the second quarter when he scrambled and was tackled by linebacker Roquan Smith. Hackenberg stayed in the game and threw four more passes, but grabbed his shoulder between plays. He headed into the locker room after an incompletion at the 18-yard line. The drive included a 51-yard pass to Chris Godwin and ended with a field goal.

Trace McSorley replaced Hackenberg, a junior and the school's all-time leader in passing yards (8,457) and touchdowns (48).

Hackenberg completed 8 of 14 passes for 139 yards against Georgia.

Hackenberg is considered one of the top prospects for the 2016 draft, if he leaves school early.
