They are providing an honorable public service by making decisions on behalf of tens of thousands of constituents. The demands of the position make it difficult to hold a normal full-time job with benefits, and so they should be compensated for their time.For decisions that specifically or mainly impact one county board district, should the rest of the board defer to the wishes of the county board member who represents the impacted district?The County Board votes as a collective, so I don't think one member should determine votes for all other members, but I think great consideration should be given to the member whose district is impacted most. Further, I think constituents should be actively engaged with their district officials to ensure that their true will is accurately represented on the Board.Do you support the redevelopment of the former Settler's Hill landfill? What is your vision for the future use of that site?I support redevelopment but I don't think a cross country course is the best strategy for that location. The return on investment seems to be negative over a ten year period, and that's a bad business move any day of the week.It does seem like a good site for a prairie and wildlife restoration area. It would be idyllic for future generations that will need more aesthetically pleasing natural areas to go to in order to recharge from the devitalizing, over-digitized society we're becoming.Do you support the push to keep the tax levies frozen for both the county board and forest preserve district? How long is it realistic for that freeze to remain in place?I think keeping tax levies frozen is wise and certainly realistic. It comes down to how we're spending public money. Illinois, and Kane County in particular, are criticized for high taxes and many claim that this is the reason people are leaving the state in record numbers. As a county that still has a little growth, we should be the trendsetters in getting to a balanced budget and keeping the tax rates low.Please list any elected office you have ever run for and what the result of that election was. Have you ever been appointed to fill an unexpired term?This will be my first term in an elected position.What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office?I've been involved in the Longmeadow Tollbridge debate. I think it's an over-sized project that will be billed to Kane County taxpayers when the bonds are not paid back in full.Localized food systems are something I'm passionate about promoting. We can create jobs and feed more people with high quality, organic food from small farms and community supported agriculture (CSA) operations. Education is also high on my list and is a field undergoing great change right now as new information from neuroscience and psychology is coming in.Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Whatever you think about his politics, Bernie Sanders is showing that it's possible to run a campaign without big corporate donors; how it should be.What is the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?That it's worth going against the grain for something you know is right.If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?Reconnecting with an old friend of mine before he passed away.What was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?No one subject stands out but my approach to learning has created many opportunities for me.If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?I love the Jim Rohn quote, "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." There's great wisdom in that.
