Lanphier tops Lake Zurich for Pekin championship

In the championship game of the 51st annual Pekin Insurance Holiday Tournament, Lake Zurich's boys basketball team fell a bit short.

The Bears got edged by Springfield Lanphier 61-56 on Wednesday.

Nick Meyer paced Lake Zurich (10-3) with a game-high 22 points while teammate Nick Penny added 11 points. Penny was named to the all-tournament team.

Meyer and Chris Trybula tied for team-high rebounding honors with 4 apiece, and Meyer, Michael Bens and Ryan Kutsor each had 2 assists.

Lanphier got 21 points from Xavier Bishop, who became the first player in tournament history to be a four-time all-tournament team honoree. Yaakema Rose added 18 points for Lanphier.

Lake Zurich shot 19-for-45 from the field but converted 14 of 15 foul shots.

Maine South 48, Stevenson 46: In the third-place game at the Hinsdale Central tournament, Maine South nailed the winning basket, a layup by Brad Perry, with 0.8 seconds remaining.

Maine South was led by Tommy Digan, who scored 15 points on 4-of-6 three-pointers. Perry finished with 11 points and Jon Arenas added 12 points.

Stevenson was paced by Ryuji Aoki. He scored 19 points, draining 5-of-10 three-pointers.

Willie Herenton added 10 points for Stevenson while Justin Smith finished with 9 points and 7 rebounds.

Stevenson drops to 8-4 while Maine South improves to 11-2.

Grayslake Central 51, Sterling 39: Jack Beckman scored a game-high 14 points to help Grayslake Central claim the consolation title at DeKalb's Chuck Dayton tournament.

The Rams trailed by a point at the half before producing a dominant 16-2 scoring edge in the third quarter.

Dejon Goodman made a pair of 3s and finished with 12 points for Grayslake Central (7-6).

Alec Novak made three 3s and finished with 9 points, and Justin Shepley made a pair of 3s on his way to 8 points and a team-best 5 steals.

Beckman paced the Rams in rebounds with 6.

Zachary Springman led Sterling (8-2) with 10 points.

Mundelein 70, Belvidere North 60: The Mustangs overcame an 11-for-25 effort at the free throw line to pick up their first victory of the year in the final round of the Chuck Dayton tournament hosted by DeKalb.

Aaron Woolford scored a game-high 18 points for the Mustangs (1-11), and Tommy Marcotte finished with 17.

Jeff Bikus and Andrew Silva both had 10 points and Kyle Enright contributed 8.

The Mustangs had a 43-34 rebounding edge on Belvidere North (0-13), and Marcotte contributed 6 assists and 4 steals.

Niles West 51, Warren 47: Octavius Parker II made nine shots - all of them 3s - on his way to a game-high 28 points against the Blue Devils late Tuesday in tournament play at Pontiac.

Maurice Chambers and Declan O'Connor both finished with 12 points for Warren, which shot 21-for-41 from the field but committed 16 turnovers.

Jayson Dorsey had a team-high 6 assists for the Blue Devils (3-10).

Carmel 61, Forest Lake 48: In Minnesota, the Corsairs captured third place in the Tartan Holiday Classic.

Carmel finished 2-1 in the tournament.
