Lake County offering $10 radon test kits

January has been designated National Radon Action Month by the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Lake County Health Department is making radon gas testing kits available for $10. The cost includes return postage, laboratory analysis and interpretation by health department staff.

Radon is an odorless and colorless gas that increases the risk of lung cancer. It is naturally found in rock and soil, and seeps into homes from through cracks in the basement floor and foundation, crawl spaces, poorly sealed sump pumps, floor drains, porous cinder block walls and other foundation floor and wall penetrations.

Test kits are also available from area hardware and building supply stores. Visit the health department site at lakecountyil.gov or call (847) 377-8020.
