Illinois activates emergency center due to winter storm

CHICAGO (AP) - Illinois officials say the State Emergency Operations Center in Springfield has been activated in response to threats of winter weather and flooding.

The National Weather Service says a storm moving across Illinois on Monday will bring wind gusts up to 60 mph, icy precipitation and waves up to 20-feet along the shores of Lake Michigan. The weather service issued storm warnings, freezing rain advisories and flood warnings.

The operations center will make sure that state workers and equipment are available if needed. State emergency officials urged Illinoisans to avoid travel due to icy roadways in northern Illinois and flooded roadways in southern Illinois.

The weather service says power outages are possible. Chicago's airports canceled more than 400 flights and had delays up to 45 minutes.

The Quad-Cities area is under a winter storm warning until 6 am Tuesday. The wintry mix of ice and snow is expected to drop ice accumulations of 1/4 to 1/2 of ice on the area and wet snow between 2 and 5 inches.
