Grayslake Central outlasts Mundelein in OT

Mundelein's boys basketball team came close to its first win of the season in Chuck Dayton tournament play Monday in DeKalb.

But Grayslake Central denied the Mustangs by winning 67-57 in overtime.

It was tied at 45 after regulation before the Rams (5-6) outscored the Mustangs (0-10) handily in the overtime.

Mundelein's Tommy Marcotte was deadly from 3-point range, finishing 5-for-5 and ending up with a game-high 28 points.

Sam Ruhlmann and Jack Beckman paced Grayslake Central (5-6) with 16 points apiece. Beckman had a game-best 11 rebounds, and teammate Dejon Goodman (9 points) came up with 4 steals.

Andrew Silva shot 6-for-11 from the field for Mundelein and finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds.

Grayslake Central advances to a 1:45 p.m. Tuesday date against Harlem, while Mundelein gets a 9 a.m. game against Chicago Schurz.

Stevenson 72, Richards 41: Ryuji Aoki scored 21 points and Justin Smith added 19 points and 7 rebounds as Stevenson moved into the semifinals at Hinsdale Central.

The Patriots (8-2) will face Homewood-Flossmoor at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Richards (7-5) got 29 points and 11 rebounds from Jaylan Catledge.

Lake Zurich 44, Freeport 42: On the first day of action in Pekin, Lake Zurich held on against Freeport. A 17-11 advantage in the second quarter proved to be the difference for the Bears.

Lake Zurich (8-2) was actually outscored in the second half by Freeport, 23-19.

Nick Penny paced Lake Zurich with 15 points and hit 7 of his 8 field goal attempts. The Bears also got 7 points out of Cam Long in winning their fifth game in a row.

Lake Zurich plays Mt. Carmel at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Carmel 67, Centennial 58: In Minnesota, the Corsairs opened the Tartan Holiday Classic with a win.

Carmel (5-5) will play Lakeville South at 6:15 p.m.

Warren/Manual, ppd.: At Pontiac, due to a power outage, the Blue Devils' opening game of the tournament was postponed until 1 p.m. Tuesday.
