Plymouth woman sentenced to 35 years in toddler's death

PLYMOUTH, Ind. (AP) - The mother of a northern Indiana toddler who was beaten to death has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Twenty-four-year-old Krysti Lavanway of Plymouth was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to neglect in the September death of 2-year-old Serenity Wilson.

The child died Sept. 19 at a Fort Wayne hospital of multiple blunt-force injuries to the head. Court documents say the girl was beaten after wetting her bed. She had been living with her mother and Lavanway's boyfriend, 23-year-old Shane Weedling, in a Plymouth motel.

Weedling is charged with murder, aggravated battery resulting in death, neglect of a dependent resulting in death and possession of marijuana.

Prosecutors dropped a murder charge against Lavanway on Monday after an autopsy showed there was no evidence she had struck the child.
