Arlington Hts. Fire Department helps Scouts earn badge

Lt. Andrew Larson, public education officer, Arlington Heights Fire Department, was approached by three Arlington Heights Cub Scout packs that needed instruction from a professional provider in order to obtain a merit badge in first aid.

On Tuesday, Dec. 1, the Arlington Heights Fire Department hosted Pack 119 from Riley Elementary School, Pack 130 from Windsor Elementary School, and Pack 37 from St. Peter School for first-aid training. Instruction was provided by Larson and Training Division Chief Dwayne Wood.

During the two hour training, 28 scouts received instruction on how they should react in five, "Hurry Cases"; serious bleeding, heart attack, absent breathing, stroke and poisoning. In addition to this, the Scouts received instruction in assisting a choking victim, treating for shock, A.E.D. utilization, and chest compressions for CPR.

At the end of the evening the Scouts practiced placing bandages and dressings on wounds, treating minor first and second degree burns, and how to treat various bites and stings from insects.

Also worked into the program were fire safety tips including creating a first-aid kit for the home and car, and developing an exit plan for their homes.
