Chicago to ticket drivers caught on camera speeding

CHICAGO (AP) - The city of Chicago will start to issue tickets to motorists caught on new traffic cameras speeding through children-safety zones.

The Automated Speed Enforcement cameras were installed at two locations in November. The city only sent warnings for the first 30 days.

A city statement says that, starting Wednesday, drivers pictured breaking the speed limit will be ticketed. The first violation still won't mean a fine. But any subsequent violation will. The statement says fines are $35 for vehicles traveling 6 to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit.

The cameras are near Mulberry Park and Keystone Park. They're on from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The city cites data that speeding violations drop by around 53 percent within 90 days in areas where cameras are installed.
