Redmoon Theater closes

Redmoon Theater announced late Monday that after 25 years, it is ceasing operations immediately.

Known for its unique theatrical vision, the Chicago company produced spectacles incorporating puppetry, art, music, movement and video projections as well as smaller narrative works.

The company performed in Elgin and Naperville in recent years and regularly held events at its Pilsen home, in Chicago neighborhoods and at landmarks such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Chicago River.

Company representatives announced the closing via a prepared release, which suggested financial problems played a role in the theater closing. Among them was The Great Chicago Fire Festival, an ill-fated 2014 project that cost the theater company money and good will.

"Our dream was to create a new kind of urban ritual," the release read. "There is no funding model for this civic and social artistic vision. We have tried to create new models ... But, quite simply and quite sadly, our innovations haven't been able to keep up with our civic goals."
