Tourney wins for Wheeling, Conant
Wheeling's girls basketball notched its first win at Warren's Blue Devil Holiday Classic with a 53-41 victory over Lake Forest on Monday.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was junior Melissa Claver, who tossed home a career-high 22 points.
Claver's previous best was 14 points which she hit twice, once as a junior in this same tourney and the other against Maine West in this season's opening game.
Classmates Coco Yoshino and Shannon Kennedy each added 8 points for the Wildcats, who raised their record to 4-8. Senior teammate Michaela Vasey chipped in 5 points.
The Wildcats return to the tourney on Wednesday to face Grayslake Central at 1:30 p.m.
Conant 40, Highland Park 26: Junior guard Jorie Wachal struck for a game-high 22 points as the Cougars (4-8) won their first game of the Mundelein Holiday Tournament.
The stingy Cougars held Highland Park to 1 field goal in the second and fourth quarters.
Wachal, who has cord at least 20 points in four games this season, had a pair of 3-pointer while senior teammate Karli Heneghan had one with her 7 points.
Conant will face Lake Park at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the 16-team tourney.
