Rohr, Lakes raring to go against Corliss
Lakes junior Kyle Rohr was involved in a third-quarter scrum for a loose ball with a Corliss player that got a little heated Monday morning in Jacobs' Hinkle Holiday Classic in Algonquin.
Rohr intended no malice but was hit with a foul and told by one of the game officials he needed to come out and take a break for a brief cooling-off period. Lakes coach Chris Snyder's unhappiness had nothing to do with his guard's intensity.
In fact, it was exactly what he wanted to see as Rohr scored a career-high 19 points and had 6 assists as Lakes snapped a four-game losing streak with a 64-38 victory in the second round of pool play.
"At halftime coach said we needed to play with passion and not just show fake passion," Rohr said. "We wanted to show how much we wanted this game and needed this win."
Lakes (4-5, 1-1 in Pool II) bounced back from a sluggish start where it gave up the first 4 points, was tied at 13-13 just 10 seconds into the second quarter and led 23-17 with 1:30 left in the first half.
But the last 5 points of the first half on a 3-pointer by junior guard Demetrius Michels (10 points) and Rohr's short jumper on the baseline was a sign of things to come in the second half.
"This was one we definitely needed because we've scuffled a little bit," Snyder said. "We were flat the first couple of quarters so our focus was to come out and play hard and compete every possession. We did see some good signs in the second half."
Lakes also got a big boost off the bench from Michels, who hit a pair of 3s and had 6 rebounds, and 6-foot-4 junior Ian Haflinger (12 points on 5-for-8 shooting).
"Those guys came in and provided a good lift for us," Snyder said.
"When they get on the court they fire us up," Rohr said. "Coach started subbing them in more often and we had lot more energy on defense and we were executing better on offense."
Rohr, who was promoted to the varsity at the Jacobs tourney last year, shot 8-for-17 from the field and hit consecutive 3s to help Lakes take a 42-21 lead.
"Kyle got us going offensively and he's a guy who can definitely score for us," Snyder said. "We're looking for him to take more and more of a leadership role."
Timothy Ohlwein added 9 points as the Eagles shot 62 percent (24-for-39) from the field. Corliss was the other extreme as it missed its first 13 attempts and 29 of 31 from behind the arc with Armani Allen (16 points) going 7-for-29 from the field and 1-for-15 on 3s.
Lakes cleaned up the misses with a 46-27 advantage as Colton Jewell had a team-high 12 rebounds and Rohr and Jordan Mercure had 8 apiece.
"We had to be ready for long rebounds ... and coach told us we need to box out," Rohr said.
