Home Economics classes are important

It has come to my attention that school District 25 is considering the elimination of Home Economic classes to be replaced with technology geared classes. While I understand and support the use of technology as the future, I feel that Home Economic courses are just as important for our children.

These classes teach children the value of healthy eating, good food choices and a balanced lifestyle that are vital for a healthy life. All children need to learn how to shop wisely, prepare healthy meals and become self-sufficient in food preparation.

Healthy eating is becoming especially important given our sedate lifestyles using technology. Our children are not as active as they used to be so balanced, healthy eating is becoming even more important in our lives.

Also considered for elimination are the courses which allow our children to "job shadow. This allows our children to "work" in different fields for a few days to explore their interests or to determine if they have an interest in that type of work.

This opportunity lets our children see a "future" for themselves and has the potential to shape their future learning direction and college choices.

I fully support technology and its role in our future. I hope that District 25's school board can also see the value and importance of Home Economic courses for our children's benefit and choose not to eliminate these classes from the curriculum.
