Race for Kirk seat deserves attention

The argument over Syrian refugees is no doubt a major issue for the 2016 U.S. Senate candidates. It not only will impact the general election, but it has already taken effect over the Democratic primary.

Both Tammy Duckworth and Andrea Zopp have issued statements regarding the issue. While both candidates expressed concern over Gov. Rauner's recent comments, there is a discrepancy between how both candidates would handle it.

I believe that this issue will become even more important as the primaries draw closer. The contrast over the issue is clear between the Democratic candidates and Mark Kirk, which only strengthens the fact that this will end up being the most competitive Senate race in the country.

Duckworth's team's comments equating Kirk's viewpoints to Donald Trump's "xenophobia" are exaggerated. While on the other hand, Kirk's ad tying Duckworth's plan to an attack similar to the one in Paris is also far-fetched.

When the time comes to vote for a senator, it will be more important than ever for voters to make an informed decision, since it could impact how the U.S. presents itself to the rest of the world.
