Mainka promoted to CONCACAF deputy general secretary

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Jurgen Mainka has been promoted to deputy general secretary of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football.

CONCACAF said Friday the 44-year-old Mainka will work with acting general secretary Ted Howard.

A Mexican and German citizen, Mainka joined CONCACAF in November 2012 as director of communications and marketing.

He previously was director of media relations for the New England Revolution (1999-03), director of communications and business for the Colorado Rapids (2003-07) and worked for Octagon (2007-09), then became director of marketing and communications for the USA Bid Committee that tried to earn hosting rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

He was vice president of communications and community relations for the New York Red Bulls from 2011-12.

CONCACAF's last three presidents, Jack Warner, Jeffrey Webb and Alfredo Hawit, were indicted by the U.S. on federal corruption charges, and Webb pleaded guilty. CONCACAF said this week it will go without a president until May.

Enrique Sanz, CONCACAF's general secretary since July 2012, was provisionally banned on June 1, pending an investigation by FIFA's ethics committee.
