Community gathers for funeral of boy killed in burglary

VERSAILLES, Ky. (AP) - A central Kentucky community said its final goodbye Friday to a 6-year-old boy who was stabbed to death during a burglary.

Hundreds of mourners filled the stands and the field at Falling Springs Recreation Center, where Logan Dean Tipton played football, according to local news outlets.

Tipton's ivory coffin was adorned by white and yellow flowers. His football jersey was mounted in a frame in front of it, and his helmet rested atop.

Woodford Youth Football League president Peter Barnhardt said coaches ask players to give all they have to the game.

"Logan, you kept your end of the deal," Barnhardt said. "You gave us everything you had, and now it's our turn."

Many people came together to give the child the send-off he deserved, Barnhardt told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

A Woodford County grand jury indicted 32-year-old Ronald Exantus of Indianapolis on Wednesday with murder, first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree assault and one count of fourth-degree assault. Police say he stabbed the boy Monday in his home while he slept. Two of the boy's sisters suffered non-life-threatening cuts in the attack.

Versailles police Lt. Michael Fortney has said detectives have found nothing to connect Extanus to the family or the town.

The suspect's lawyer has questioned his competency.
