Our Lady of the Wayside students shop for those in need
Our Lady of the Wayside Middle School students keep giving back. On Wednesday, Dec. 9, Target in Arlington Heights had a special group of shoppers - middle school students from Our Lady of the Wayside School. Each grade, plus student council, adopted one family and brought in donations that allowed them to shop for Christmas presents for that family. The students donated more than $2,300.
The students are often surprised at some of the wish list requests because they include things that many young people don't need to ask for as a present; a winter coat, snow boots, pillows.
"Our students are very thoughtful and careful with their choices and try to get as much as possible with their money. We are very proud of these kids," said Barb Boarini, assistant school principal.
Target agreed to open up checkout lanes just for the Our Lady of the Wayside students and because of the generosity of one parent, who used her Target REDcard and coupons, each grade was also able to gift a $50 gift card to their adopted family. The students will wrap and tag all the gifts and present them to Catholic Charities in time for Christmas.
