Children get a science lesson on ice cream

Young taste testers enjoyed frozen treats Thursday during National Ice Cream Day with Sunset Foods at the Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire.

Sunset Foods chefs Charles Gullo and Nicole Melle discussed the science and the history of ice cream for 16 children in grades 3-5 who attended the program.

"Kids like talking about ice cream and talking about food and cooking," said Gullo before showing the kids how to make ice cream. "Ice cream is a great dessert. You can have it for the beginning of your meal, the end of your meal, whenever you want it."

While showing the kids the process of mixing cream, sugar, egg yolks and salt together, scoops of raspberry sorbet, lemon gelato and vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips and sprinkles were passed around to sample.

"I think the class is great because you get to learn something new. He knows a lot about ice cream and how to make them. I'm waiting for the ice cream with the chocolate sprinkles," said Eric Kim, 9, of Buffalo Grove as he gobbled down gelato.
